Smart Assistants (Smart Speakers)
Available through one of the many different affordable smart speakers out there on the market currently (or even on many smart televisions and phones nowadays), smart assistants are taking homes by storm, becoming a popular stocking filler gift that people of all ages have set up and in use. Controlled by voice, they can be used to set timers, alarms, check the weather, and even find recipes online. They’re a great way to quickly spruce up the home with some fancy tech, and at the very least will impress friends and family when they come to visit.
You might have already seen these sorts of color-changing lighting setups in different videos online or throughout people’s homes, and they’re incredibly easy to set up; some would say as easy as screwing in a lightbulb! Connecting easily to your Wi-Fi in the home and controllable through a downloadable smartphone app (depending on the brand and type you go with; the Phillips Hue series is one of the most popular available out there), smart lighting is a relatively affordable and yet impressive piece of kit to get started with.
Being able to shift up the mood and tone of a room in a pinch is perfect again for those entertaining guests and who want to bring the party. In modern, forward-thinking city apartments such as the ones offered by RWinvest, similar smart lighting is a regular fixture, allowing the young professional tenants to make the most of the surrounding space.
Tip – One of the best ways to kit out your home is by embracing the concept of the ‘internet of things’ (or more generally, the ‘smart home’), and connecting a bunch of your different devices together. Got one of the smart assistants that we described earlier, through a speaker such as the Amazon Echo or Google Home series? You can quickly link up the apps to bridge many of these compatible devices, and do fun things such as use voice commands to turn on the lights. Other handy features such as smart thermostats can easily be hooked up, helping to make your home feel more futuristic.
What’s cooler than having a secure home, and making sure that you and your family feel safe? Again, with the help of the smart home concept and devices being interconnected, or tied together through Wi-Fi in the home, a sleek security system that covers all bases has never been easier. Rather than having wires and boxes with VHS tapes everywhere, HD cameras stream directly through to your phone, and can even be set to only record the important stuff when noticing motion.
Again, using app functionality with your mobile, security apps through Arlo and Ring devices, for example, can even be accessed remotely, meaning that you can check in on your home even when you’re not there. The saying goes that home is where the heart is, and touches such as this really allows you to be connected to your home no matter where you are.
Tip – On the subject of being connected to your home when not even there, did you know that you can also control some of the other gadgets discussed from afar? In theory, while on the train home from work, you could turn your lights into a nice, warming tone, get your favorite music playing for when you walk through the door and even turn on the heating to make it nice and toasty after a long day.
